How to Prank a Coworker or Boss Without Getting Fired
Share
Every office has one: the guy who steals lunches from the break room fridge, the boss who takes credit in every meeting, the coworker who reheats fish in the microwave. They deserve a response. Here's how to prank them well — funny enough to become office legend, harmless enough that you still have a job on Monday.
1. Send Them a Clown Nose in a Box
The gold standard of office pranks: a real clown nose, anonymously mailed straight to their desk. No return address, no explanation — just a mysterious box that begs to be opened, and inside, one bright red nose delivering the message everyone's been thinking: you're a clown. It's funny, it's harmless, and nobody can prove it was you.
2. The Desk Swap
Come in early and move every single item on their desk exactly one inch to the left. Nothing missing, nothing broken — just enough to make them quietly question their own sanity all day.
3. The Sticky Note Ambush
Cover their entire desk, chair, monitor, and keyboard in sticky notes overnight. Classic for a reason — high visual payoff, zero actual damage, and it takes them twenty minutes just to clean up.
4. The Screensaver Swap
While they're at lunch, change their desktop background to something ridiculous — a close-up of a clown, a picture of a llama, anything absurd. Reset it before they notice, or let it ride for a few days. Easy, reversible, and gets funnier every time someone walks by their desk.
5. The Air Horn Drawer
Rig a small air horn or noisemaker to go off (gently) when they open their desk drawer. Startling, hilarious, and over in two seconds.
What to Avoid
Good office pranks are funny for everyone, including the person on the receiving end, once the shock wears off. Skip anything that damages equipment, involves food safety risks, embarrasses someone in front of clients, or could reasonably be read as harassment. If there's any doubt whether HR would laugh or wince, that's your answer.
Bottom line: the best office pranks are memorable, harmless, and completely deniable. Nothing checks all three boxes quite like a Clown Nose in a Box showing up on their desk with no explanation at all.
